Bowen technique does not replace medical treatment. Rather it is complementary. However, its extraordinary success rate and its ability to speed up recovery time are making an impact. More and more members of the medical profession are seeing the effectiveness of this unique therapy and either adding it to their own practice or referring their patients to a professional Bowen Practitioner.

Bowen at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital
Alternative Integrated Medicine (AIM for Health):  this program at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, NC. under the direction of Gerry Townsend, M.D. is an outpatient program that offers Bowen to acute and chronic patients that have not responded to traditional treatment for myofascial pain syndrome, back pain, TMJ, fibromyalgia, arthritis, fractures, soft tissue trauma, and gynaecological dysfunction.

Orthopaedic surgeon’s “modality of choice”
Although skeptical at first, C.S.Whitman, M.D. an orthopaedic surgeon, now regularly refers patients to Dr Townsend’s program, and declared the Bowen Technique to be his modality of choice for treatment of most myofascial pain syndrome.

Bowen in Hospital Pain Management Unit
Brenda Williams, Director of the Quiet Miracles Program in North Carolina, chose the Bowen Technique as the sole hands-on component of her hospital’s pain management unit.

Bowen in HMO Practice
Audrey Butko,M.D. finds the Bowen Technique to be a blessing in an HMO practice because of its simplicity, results and patients satisfaction and time management with the ability to treat several patients simultaneously. The Bowen Technique has nearly eliminated her need to use cortisone injections. She reports that elderly patients with arthritic knees walk away with less pain. She routinely applies the Bowen Technique for acute asthma, low back pain, patello-femoral and carpal tunnel syndromes.

Bowen and Podiatry
Mitchell R. Mosher, DPM, claims that the Bowen Technique is one of the most powerful physical medicine techniques that he learned in 24 years as a podiatrist attending countless podiatry related seminars. He routinely uses the Bowen Technique to complement his treatment of various foot and ankle conditions (hallux valgus with bunion, hallux limitus rigitus, joint pain, hammer toes, burning foot, ankle sprain, leg/foot cramp, heel pain, fasciatis) and apply it pre/post op to reduce pain and help healing.

Bowen and Homeopathy
Dr. Robert Ullman is a naturopathic and homeopathic physician and is co-founder of the Northwest Centre for Homeopathic Medicine in Edmonds, WA. Here are case studies of three people from his practice who responded well to the Bowen Technique:

Nancy, 23, had had pain in the hips since she was a teenager.  The pain was severe and radiated down the outside of her legs to her knees.  It would come on particularly when she was angry or upset.  Exercise would make it worse, and it had come on from extensive gymnastic practice in high school and college.  No treatment had ever been successful in relieving the pain.  After two Bowen treatments, Nancy reported that the pain was completely relieved.
It turned once after an emotional trauma a few months later and one treatment took care of it.

Sam, 52, had chronic spasms in his neck and shoulder.  He never seemed to be able to relax.  He worked too hard and took his problems home from work.  During his Bowen treatment, Sam went into a very deep state of relaxation, nearly asleep.  When the treatment was finished, he said that he had not felt that kind of rest in years.  The effect stayed with him and his pain completely went away within a week after his second treatment.  He then took his first vacation in a decade.

Jill, 49, had asthma and chronically swollen, painful knees.  The Bowen moves were able to relieve her bronchial spasms and allow freer breathing, but did not totally cure the asthma.  Her knees, however, had a complete reduction in swelling and pain, and considerably increased mobility after two treatments.  Now she can go up and down stairs without pain.

Bowen and a family physician
Dr. Christine Staub, a family physician with a special interest in the treatment of chronic pain, has seen the Bowen Technique “unlock the door” for patients who reached an impasse in their pain treatment. “I am thrilled to have Bowen Therapy as a resource for myself, family, friends and patients,” she said.

What Health Professionals are saying…
Dr JoAnne Whitaker, M.D. – “I was facing a hip replacement and back surgery when I discovered the Bowen Technique. After receiving Bowen treatments, not only was I able to walk, but I went back to playing golf…without surgery. I was so impressed that I flew to Australia to train in the Bowen Technique and now treat patients with ailments ranging from bunions to heart disease.

Audrey Butko M.D. – “I consider the Bowen Technique to be a blessing in my practice because of its simplicity, results and patient satisfaction. It has nearly eliminated my need to use cortisone injections.”

Dr Michael Buckmann -”Clients who present with both acute and chronic pain, having often sought treatment in vain from a variety of other experts and specialists, are consistently free of their problems within a very short time by using Bowen. In fact, most clients require only 2 or 3 sessions to achieve long term benefits.”

Mitchell R. Mosher, DPM – “The Bowen Technique is one of the most powerful physical medicine techniques I have learned in 24 years as a podiatrist. I routinely use the Bowen Technique to complement treatment of various foot and ankle injuries.”

Gerry Townsend, M.D. – “I offer the Bowen Technique to acute and chronic patients who have not responded to traditional treatment for myofascial pain syndrome, back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis or fractures. Although skeptical at first, C.S. Whitman, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, now regularly refers patients to Dr. Townsend’s program.”

J. T. M.D. Physician, Medical Researcher, Biotechnology Company – “I have noted improvement in stress related muscle pain and tension, joint pain and posture. Bowen Therapy sessions may benefit people with musculoskeletal pain as well as other stress related symptoms. Much to my surprise, my neck pain got resolved through this work. I am very pleased with the results and quite amazed!”

L. White. MD – Physician, former Professor of Cardiology -“This body work has been enormously beneficial in allowing me to feel freer, less constricted, more mobile and better aligned. I highly recommend Bowen Therapy.”

Dr Robert Flemming MD – “After over 30 years of medical practice, I am finding the Bowen Technique the most effective and efficient hands-on procedure I’ve ever studied. I fully recommend this technique to all health practitioners.”

Dr Ted Sleigh – “Of all the modalities I have used, Bowen Therapy has helped so many of my patients that I would never want to give it up.”

Dr Christine Staub – “As a board-certified family physician with a special interest in the treatment of chronic illness and pain syndromes, I am thrilled to have Bowen Therapy as a resource for myself, family, friends and patients.”

Oscar C. Weitzberg, Rockville, MD -”Two chronic problems cleared up after a few Bowen sessions three months ago. As far back as I can remember, I tended toward constipation. After eighty-five years of laxatives, enemas, and suppositories, I’m now regular — even without Metamucil. My sinus condition began in the early 1950s. After the doctor’s initial treatments with iodine, I irrigated my sinuses with saline solution for about ten years, then used Neosynephrine for thirty years, and finally used Nasacor daily for ten years. Since the Bowen, my sinuses are clear without any medication.”

Dr Fred Menier – “I have been able to notice results even in chronic situations such as rheumatism, TMJ, chronic asthma and emotional depression.”
